About hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis

E-mail Print PDF

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of restful alertness. In this state the subconscious is open and receptive to accept suggestions.

Hypnosis can be induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which is composed of preliminary instructions and suggestions.

Hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist in the presence of the subject, or may be self-administered ("self-suggestion" or "autosuggestion").

What is hypnotherapy?

The use of hypnotism for therapeutic purposes is referred to as "hypnotherapy".

How does hypnosis work?

Our mind has two parts – the conscious and the subconscious. Everything that we’ve ever experienced, seen, heard, smelled, tasted, felt – is stored in our subconscious mind. It is a repository of all our memories of all lifetimes. Our belief system is also stored in the subconscious mind.

During the session, the hypnotherapist helps the subject to access these memories to help them find the root cause behind their condition(s). He also helps them make changes in their attitude and behaviour through creative imagery and hypnotherapy techniques.

However, it’s the choice of the subject whether to accept suggestions or not. Hypnotist delivers the hypnotic suggestions which the subject wants.

Do you black out when you are hypnotized?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. It is not a state of unconsciousness.

Contemporary research suggests that hypnosis is actually a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, with diminished peripheral awareness.

The subject normally remains consciously aware of their surroundings.

Even in deeper states of hypnosis, in which a subject is no longer consciously aware of their surroundings, the subject is not actually “sleeping”. They are just in a very deep, relaxed and suggestible state. They are still subconsciously aware of everything that is being said and everything that is happening around them.

A person in a hypnotic state retains full control of their decisions. They can decide to comply with a suggestion or reject it.

The person is able to return to the present easily on their own by counting from one to five. Counting is not necessary but helps the process.

Is hypnosis dangerous?

According to many instructors, hypnosis of and by itself is not dangerous. If it were, we would all be in jeopardy every time we get engrossed in a TV show, movie, or book.

Other examples of trance are highway hypnosis and staring out the window. We all have experienced it.

What is Regression to Cause?

Regression to Cause is a term used to describe the process of using our subconscious mind to connect to the initial situation or feelings that are the source of a problem in our life today. The cause may lie in the present life or a past life.

What is Age Regression?

The term describes a process in which the subject returns to an earlier stage of life in order to explore a memory or to get in touch with some difficult-to-access aspect of their personality.

What is Past Life Regression?

Past Life Regression is the ability of a person to selectively access the memories of lives lived earlier than the current birth.

These memories include impressions of traumas from past lifetimes which manifest at various levels of our existence and cause problems in the current life. The problems can be physical, mental, emotional illnesses as well as blocks in relationships, business, financial and spiritual growth, etc.

E.g., some cases of asthma have been found to have their origin in past life, where the person suffering died due to 'stoppage of breath' due to any reason. The present life situation, at a particular time and conditions (could be weather, pollens, dust, etc.) triggers this memory of past life.

What is the procedure to recall past life using regression?

Once the person in hypnosis state, using post-hypnotic suggestions hypnotist makes a person to start recalling past memories through series of some simple questions.

What type of problems can be treated with Regression to Cause?

Regressions are particularly valuable when dealing with issues that have no “rational” cause. Regressions are helpful in solving relationship problems, in phobias, addictions, chronic pain, illnesses, etc.

How can hypnosis skills be useful for a Pranic Healer (or Energy Healer)?

Hypnosis skills allow the practitioner to uncover the root cause of the problem. Thereafter the energy healing can be applied more economically and effectively to complete the treatment.

These skills may compliment the Verbal and Visual Instructive Healing.

Is it a miracle cure?

Regression is one of the most effective psychological and transpersonal tools available and often saves many years of psychotherapy, however, nothing is a panacea.

Uncovering the root cause explains the cause of a current life problem, but for the person it’s still necessary to follow through by

  • taking responsibility for their life,
  • forgiving themselves and anyone involved,
  • and by taking appropriate actions that will help to solve the problem or reach the goal.

Any technique I can do myself now?

The following passage is taken from Sylvia Hartmann’s article ‘Better Meditation - Top Tips For Going Into Trance, Staying There, And Going Deeper Into Trance’.

“Stress and meditation are mutually exclusive and in order to meditate successfully or go into trance, never mind into a stable, deep and lucid trance which is what with PS, we need to take out stress.

There are basically two ways to do this.

The first is to take on your stress and do something with it, so it's out of the way and the path into trance is clear.

For example, Robert Monroe used to suggest as the very first thing in his inductions to walk on a beach and find a big old heavy chest with a very heavy lid. Into that, you place the things that stress you until they're all inside. Then you close the heavy lid, turn away and walk into the meditation or trance from there.

Our version of this is the Thought Flow technique, whereby you hold out your hands and create a sphere into which you pour your troubles and all that worries you. Then, when the sphere has absorbed everything you need to get rid of, you lift it up and throw it backwards over your head so it's gone. This has the added bonus of the problems being handed over to the HEROS (higher energetic reality operating systems) for further processing.

Another version is to have your troubles become encased in bubbles that float away, or even bubble up from out of the very structure of your body, as in the Bubble induction.”
